WOOD BURNING STOVES AND FIREPLACES
Q: My fireplace smokes. How can I resolve this problem?
A: Check the suitability of the flue (diameter, length, etc), chimney pot (out of the backflow area) and external air intake (essential requirement).
Please refer to the details specified in the product data sheet for the correct specifications.
Q: What type of wood should I use for my fireplace?
A: Dry wood with humidity of about 20% and with a drying period of about 2 years.
Q: Is it possible to connect two fireboxes into the same flue?
A: No, every firebox, whether stove or fireplace, must have a dedicated flue.
Q: What volume must the environment have where the fireplace is to be installed?
A: Every fireplace must be proportioned to the environment in which it is installed and vice versa; to evaluate the correct dimension, refer to the technical sheet attached to each model.
Q: Why must I have an external air intake?
A: This is because during functioning the firebox consumes air from the environment, which must be replaced. Practically, the firebox must function without interfering with the indoor environment; the lack of air intake can cause fumes to return.
Q: Do safety distances from the wall have to be respected when installing a stove?
A: Yes There must be a minimum distance at the sides and rear especially from inflammable materials (see technical sheet).
Q: What is the technical reference Standard for the installation of fireplaces and stoves?
A: In Italy it is the UNI 10683 Standard.
Q: What are the main rules to be followed for the installation of a firebox or for preparing the connections for future installation?
A: It is important to consider the appliances as totally independent, from the air intake vent to the chimney, with respect to any others that are installed (wall boilers, heat pumps, air conditioners, suction devices, etc.).
Practically, every firebox must have an air intake, dedicated flue and chimney and must not interfere with other systems.
PELLET BURNING STOVES AND FIREPLACES
D: What is the main advantage of a pellet stove with respect to a wood burning stove?
R: The autonomy. A pellet stove can function for many hours without having to be fed; it can be programmed to switch-on and switch-off and can be controlled at a distance via telephone.
Q: I don’t have a flue. Can I still install a fireplace or stove?
A: NO, all pellet burning fireplaces need an outlet pipe (flue) of just 8/10 cm in diameter, which can be positioned off-centre from the fireplace if necessary.
From a practical point of view, the outlet pipe can even be installed outside (subject to obtaining the necessary permits) as long as it has a vertical section at the end of at least 1.5 m.
Q: Can other fuels be used in pellet stoves (wood, waste organic material, etc)?
A: No, any other fuel different to pellets can jeopardise stove functioning.
Q: Do I always have to use the same type of pellet?
A: NO, you can use different types of pellets as long as they are certified, the correct size and meet the characteristics specified in the data sheet.
N.B. If you change the pellet type, you may need to recalibrate the combustion parameters accordingly.
Q: Are particular precautions necessary for storing pellets?
A: The bags must be stored in a dry place.
Q: Do pellet burning stoves need to be ignited and calibrated by specialised personnel?
A: YES, this is required to ensure correct operation. Please contact your local dealer.
The warranty cannot be activated if the first ignition and calibration are not performed by the dealer.
Q: What sort of routine maintenance must be performed for pellet burning stoves?
A: Cleaning, as recommended in the data sheet supplied with the product, must be performed as follows:
1- daily (requires just a few minutes);
2- weekly;
3- seasonally.
N.B. It is important to follow the instructions given in the data sheet.
PELLET BURNING THERMO PRODUCTS (THERMO-STOVES, THERMO-FIREPLACES AND BOILERS)
Q: What provisions do I need to make for the installation of a pellet burning thermo-stove?
A: The following provisions are required:
- Smoke outlet pipe of 8 or 10 cm in diameter (depending on the model).
The smoke outlet pipe (flue) must have a vertical section at the end of at least 1.5 m (see details on the data sheet supplied with the product).
- Air intake in the room of at least 80 cm2.
Alternatively, some thermo-stoves have a pipe union at the rear to which an air intake pipe can be connected directly from the outside.
- Flow and return connection to the header: ¾ " G
- Overpressure valve discharge into drain system: ¾ " G
- Water feed connection: ¾ " G
- Electrical connection to system compliant with regulations with thermal-magnetic circuit breaker 230V +/- 10%, 50 Hz.
N.B. The smoke outlet pipe (flue) must only receive discharge from the thermo-stove.
Q: Can the thermo-stove be operated even if it is not connected to the heating system?
A: NO, igniting the stove without water in the system and in the thermo-stove will cause serious damage.
Q: Does the thermo-stove emit hot air?
A: Not all models. All of the energy produced by a thermo-stove is usually transferred to the water. In some cases a small amount of energy may be released in the room of installation in the form of warm air and radiation.
Q: Can I connect stove flow and return directly to a system terminal (radiator)?
A: NO, as for all other boilers, connection must be made to the collector from where the water is then distributed to the system terminals.
Q: Can the thermo-stove also supply domestic hot water?
A: Yes, if equipped with a purposely designed kit.
Q: Can smoke from the thermo-stove be discharged directly out of a wall?
A: Yes, as long as the outdoor part of the outlet pipe has a vertical section at the end of at least 1.5 m and subject to any permits that may be required (please refer to the technical data sheet supplied with the product)
N.B. The flue must only receive discharge from the thermo-stove.
Q: Does the room need an air intake?
A: Yes, to replace air in the room consumed by combustion.
Alternatively, some models have a pipe union at the rear to which an air intake pipe can be connected directly from the outside.
Q: What do I have to set on the stove display?
A: The desired temperature of the water and the stove consequently modulates the power in order to obtain or maintain it. For small plants it is possible to set a work mode that envisions stove switch-off and switch-on depending on the temperature of the water reached.
Q: How often must I clean the crucible?
A: It is ideal before every ignition with the stove off and cold. AFTER HAVING SWABBED THE EXCHANGE PIPES and activated the scrapers, with the door closed.
Q: Must I se a suction device inside the pellet tank?
A: Yes, at least once a month and when the stove is not used for long periods.
Q: Can I burn other things apart from pellets?
A: NO. The stove is designed to burn pellets, other material may damage it.
Q: Can I turn the stove on by sending a text message?
A: Yes, if a suitable telephone dialler (such as Edilkamin’s GSM dialler) is installed by an Edilkamin dealer.
WOOD BURNING THERMO PRODUCTS (THERMO-STOVES, THERMO-FIREPLACES AND BOILERS)
Q: Can they be used when not connected to water for the heating system?
A: NO, using them without water, even occasionally, can cause serious damage.
Q: Can they be used solely to produce ACS (domestic hot water)?
A: Yes, using a boiler. However, this type of use is not recommended as water in the circuit is at risk of boiling with wood burning products.
Q: Can wood burning thermo-products only be used with open tank systems?
A: NO, but use with a closed tank system is only possible for models with a coil controlled by a temperature relief valve and correct water feed and drainage installation.
Q: For products with 4 connections, is it possible for the flow and return to be connected on the same side?
A: NO, only cross flow installation guarantees the correct performance.
